A Therapists Journey

Updated: Sep 3

I want my head to explode

into ten thousand pieces

like the bodhisattva who

at the gates of transcendence

turns back and says - not until we are all ready

I want each piece to become

an extension of the mystery

a thousand limbs reaching out

to those in need welcoming them in

a thousand brains expanding

the capacity of my felt sense

a thousand hearts to listen

to hear the pain, the messages of wisdom

a thousand paths of stretching

and growing I am committed to walking,

with patience

I want to feel confident, stride with cadence

confirming the world is benevolent

I want to hold space for suffering

and not rush others just to ease my discomfort

I want to embody the role of elder

of guide

a thousand bridges between us

and that which is greater than life

a thousand conduits allowing

light to move through me

so that I may be a lighthouse

in the storm

I want to be master at

creating internal spaciousness

in knowing my needs, I want

to have the courage to walk away

from structures that no longer serve me

I want to walk into the unknown

with arms wide, palms open

I want to surrender to the journey

to acquiesce

to the flow

of life

of learning

ten thousand lessons

About the Writer

Amber is currently a student undertaking the Connection Culture Holistic Psychotherapy training.

They say:

"Hey there - I’m Amber; a nomadic poet and therapist-in-training whose life is shaped by movement and connection which means I’m most comfortable in the middle ground; the grey area of uncertainty and nuance.

Bringing a near decade of experience in community services; mostly helping young people and families repair connections, to my journey of stretching and growing into a heart centred therapist had a bumpy start - as is often the case with lasting transformation; in my experience.

I wrote A Therapist’s Journey after reflecting on my desire to be someone who walks alongside others, offering tender compassion and insight whilst holding space for suffering without rushing or seeking to fix.

It's a privilege to be on this journey with the guidance of beautiful teachers and mentors. I feel so much gratitude for the care and tenderness that flows so freely. To me, this poem is an example of the magic and mystery revealed when engaging in cultural repair.”
